Abencerrajes

The constitution of the Abencerrajes was approved by the board on November 12, 1980, but its final growth did not occur until 1986, when it received a large influx of festive members from the Mariners, Almogàvers and Estudiants, with the modification of its statutes and elegance dress. Its progress has been unstoppable since them, it is currently one of the largest “comparsa” of our Moors and Christians.

The design of its current elegance dress was made by Flor Azorin, taking the white, black and gold as unique colours. Its second suit or djellabah adopts classical forms of this moor dress in our parties, combining the green, black and white stripes.

Benimerins

It was founded in 1947 with the intention to be called Tuaregs, but at the request of the authorities they chose the name Benimerins.

The costume was improvised between different pieces of clothing that were found in the Trelis store in Alcoi. With Moros Marinos keeps the Ottoman style with lollipop and bloomers, yellow cummerbund, great coat, turban, spear and slippers.

The daily dress is a blue, green, red and white stripes djellabah. This hijab replaced the old suit made in cotton.

Due to the Captaincy in 1991, they released "Benimerins d'Ontinyent" by Daniel J. Ferrero Silvaje.

Moros Marinos

Born in 1865, the Moros marinos “comparsa” is one of the oldest in our festivities. Almost from its birth staged with the Marineros the “Nit del Riu”, with naval battles in the riverbed of Clariano passing by the Canterería. Reminiscent of that era is the boat "Almanzor" that every year is present in the formal parade, usually exerting as logo and banner this “comparsa”. In 1989 they made a change of clothes with more stately resemblance. Lately, in 2002, they recovered its traditional Ottoman resemblance costume, in which emphasises the baggy blue trousers and red blouse with elaborately embroidered sailor top. Furthermore, they recover the iconic shovel accompanying the elegance dress, which is adorned with flowers in the Sunday procession. Daily wearing consists of garnet red stripes on white djellabah, and red Fez hat with the star and crescent.

Mudéjares

A group of festive members arrived from the Omeyas, Kábilas and Arqueros founded the Mudéjares “comparsa” in 1975. The Moorish artist Fernando Cambra was the designer of clothing. The elegance apparel consists of bone-coloured djellabah and green terylene coat with a Moorish Arabic drawing on the hood. They wear a hat as a turban made of silk and terylene, with black silk veil hanging. As originally they claimed to be a village of artists and not warriors, they did not take any weapons, an issue that was solved with the addition of a small dagger. Daily clothing is a cotton and terylene djellabah with brown and bone-coloured vertical stripes.

Omeyas

Founded after the festivities of 1970 with a group of seventeen friends from the Moros Españoles who along with other friends decided to expand the Moorish Army.

They took this name to commemorate the dynasty that many sovereigns contributed to the Caliphate of Córdoba. As representatives of this powerful dynasty, the clothes should be sumptuous and elegant, and the elegance djellabah combines green and blue with majestic gold and it is completed with a stylish white coat.

The daily dress consists of fuchsia djellabah, Fez hat, blue shoes and classic leather bag.

Gonzalo Gramage in 1979, Rafael Iborra in 1990 and Beatriz Alemany in 2002 are the three captains who had the “comparsa”. It is important to notice that Beatriz was the first woman to hold the charge in the Moorish Army.

Saudites

This “comparsa” born in 1967 from antique components of Mossàrabs. The dress is inspired by an original design of Kuwait, on which an adaptation that wore until 1981, when the difficulty of finding shelter fabric had to be changed by the current was. Our flag is inspired by the shields of Saudi Arabia. In 2009, we acquired as own headquarters, a building on the street Tomas Valls 11 as we had always had in Festivities Society. Over the years, several music bands joined us as an official band: first the Muro and Quatretonda, then the Palomar for seven years, from 1974 Llanera and since 2000, the Otos one. The “comparsa”, in these years, has contributed their effort and human capital to the feast: Emilio Reig Torró, Vicent Gil Montés and Joaquin Sanz Martinez were presidents of the Festivities Society. Antonio Sanz Iranzo (1974), Ricardo Cardona Salvador (1983), Julio Antolin Martin (1995) and Carlos Gironés Sanchis (2007), the four captains that the “comparsa” has given the Moors. Joaquín Sierra Soler (1981), Antonio Reig Alcaraz (1989) and Carlos Gironés Sanchis (2001), the three ambassadors who recited the parliaments and Francisco Pla Penadés (1981), Julio Antolin Gilabert (1989) and José Luis Soler Romero (2001), the charge of guarding the Moorish flag. Also Ricardo Cardona Salvador (1983), Jaume Sanchis i Bernabeu (1989), José María Ferrero Silvaje (1995), Juanjo Bas Porter (1997), Manuel Requena Collado (2004) and Alfred Bernabeu i Sanchis (2007), the members who announced the great day with their proclamations. And as the voice of the festivities is the music, we have contributed to its greatness, first with José María Ferrero Pastor, the Master, one of the greats in the festive composition, along with his son Daniel Ferrero Silvaje and Marcos Gandía Conejero. We have a magazine since 1997 and in 2007, on the occasion of the fortieth anniversary, was also born our website, where everyone can find much more information about who and how are the Saudites of Ontinyent.

Almogavers

This “comparsa” was founded in 1974 and its first appearance in the festivities was in 1975. They take their name from the ancient Almogàvers who fought with King Conquistador. The design of the dress is original almogávar José M. Reig Valls, and has suffered very few changes, maybe be called improvements. It is constituted by a red velvet tunic with short sleeves, topped with black finishes. They carry an eagle with four bars of the Crown of Aragon in the chest, leather belt and black velvet cape with gold braid and covered in white, boots, leather bracelets and helmet with feathers. The second suit was changed in 1985 and replaced by a design by Jordi Arrué, almogávar too, respecting the beige and brown colours and incorporating the lily and the cape.

Archers

Its first appeared was in 1968 and has its origin in a group of festive members from the “Mozárabes” who chose to create a new “comparsa”. Initially they took a "Robin Hood" style apparel, arc included. It is in 1986 when the clothing is changed for another, more suitable to the classic Christian warrior. In 2005 they returned to change their clothes respecting the colours of the “comparsa”: a piece suit which is based on a brown tunic and a kind of chest protection in cream and orange, shield from crown of Aragon in the chest and the original cross of the Arqueros. They wear the bow and the quiver in the back and their head is covered by a loop coat and a little metal crown.

Astures

This “comparsa” was born in 1984; it is the youngest of the festivities. It was formed when El Trabuc group exited from “Chanos”. They wanted to regain the old “comparsa” of Churros, but the board dismissed the petition alleging that this weren’t within the historical context of the feast. They took the name of “Astures” in explicit reference to the people of the northern Iberian peninsula and in particular by the figure of Don Pelayo and the Battle of Covadonga. The original design was made by Flor Azorín and consists of a white dalmatic with black finishes and ornaments and gold finishing, beige and gold loop coat and old gold burnished helmet. They wear a golden on black Asturias cross in the chest and cape, belt, bag and leather boots. The second suit is beige and black background hood and keeps boots, belt and bag. Recently, on a design by Joan Vicent Martinez i Ballester the dress has been substantially amended: the dalmatic is longer and the cape is rounder.

Estudiants

This “comparsa” was founded in 1860. After the Captaincy of 1966 and in a crisis, many components had to leave the festivities some time. But an enthusiastic group of festive members caused its reappearance. Patricia Salinas Conejero was the captain in 2000 and the “comparsa” became a milestone because she was the first woman who was Captain of our festivities. This fact ended the last hurdle remained to normalize the participation of women in the feast. Loaded with forks, spoons or pencils, they try to give the feeling of youthful rebellion that corresponds to the students, but the reality is unquestionable seriousness when they go outside.

This dress was short-lived because they adopted the current one in 1986, consisting of white dalmatic, red cape, warrior boots, helmet and shoulder pads intertwined with metal ornaments. In 1994 they also changed the second dress, which becomes a harlequinade dalmatic into four parts which combines grey and green colours on which is the cross in red that characterizes this “comparsa”.

José Gandía Coll was the first “guzmán” captain in 1989, while Carlos Martí Donat and José Martínez Fernández were ambassador and flag bearer in 1995. On the occasion of this first captaincy, "Guzmans d'Ontinyent" composed by Daniel J. Ferrero Silvaje was released. And the same author composed “Tres Gusmans” when Carlos Martí Donat and José Martínez Fernández were ambassador and flag bearer.

Llauradors

Its first time in the festivities was in 1883.

The elegance and daily apparel are related to popular clothes that were used on the fields and towns of our country in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In fact, the elegance dress has corduroy or black velvet embroidered waistcoat and black velvet trousers, belt, stockings, red garters, blanket at shoulder and headscarf. They wear sandals shoes and smock.

The waistcoat is printed and the “saragüell” replaces the black trousers in the daily clothes.

This “comparsa” regained the Farmers Dance in 1991 that, with others groups, went through the streets of the town since the end of the nineteenth century up to the Spanish Civil War.

It is traditional too, since it was regained, sharing verses on the Alardo Night where the members were named and they are signed by “Granota del Pou del Canyís” since 1990.

It was the largest “comparsa” for years and had more relevant people within the festivities. Many groups exited from here to found or form other “comparsas”. They and the “Contrabandistas” realize the Smuggling Act on Saturday noon in the feast. Its elegance dress has changed since its beginnings but it has always been inspired by the Navy apparel. A change was made trying to return to the original clothing in 1986 and another change was again in 1995 taking a more historical and more sailor model. They wear a three-cornered style hat, blue sailor top with white lapels and red scarf; red sash, white trousers, black boots and the classic blade.
