Data of interest

The Fontanos troupe was officially born in 1940. Before that there were several attempts to create it, which were cut short when the Civil War broke out.

This troupe represents the first Christian settlers of the city, and because of this they adopt the name Fontanos, based on the belief that Ontinyent was formerly called Fontinyent. To this day she is the only one who displays the municipality’s coat of arms on her suit. The first clothing was inspired by the time of the Reconquista. The gala dress consisted of a white robe, with green borders
Around them, who held on their chest the glorious Red Cross that presided over the struggles of the Christians in their crusades against the children of Muhammad, wore a blue cape as a representation of water, which is the purest, most appreciated and abundant good of these lands. As weapons, a sword and the characteristic club, combat mace in their hand-to-hand fights against the hosts of the Crescent. To cover the head,
They wore a round helmet. They wore straps crossed on their chests and brown sandals with blue leggings.

The second suit changed the white tunic for a gray one.

This costume has changed over the years, different types of helmets and weapons have been part of their clothing, but the gala costume has always been faithful to the initial colors of the troupe, white and blue, colors that They also identify the patron saint of the
city, the Purísima.

The current gala costume consists of a knee-length white and blue tunic, with the city’s coat of arms embroidered on it. On their shoulders they wear a chain of mail that also covers their heads, and above it a metal crown with the shield of the Order of Montesa. This same cross is the protagonist of the white cape they carry on their backs. The suit is completed with black leather boots and a belt with a bag made of the same material, which combine with metallic details. The current weapon is a sword with city motifs.

The second suit changes the white tunic for a green one, with the city’s shield on the chest, and a white cape without a shield. He abandons the helmet and keeps the boots, the Belt with pouch and the chain mail.

Devoted to the traditions and customs of this town, the Fontanos were bearers of the image of the Purísima on her centenary, a devotion that continued for many years with the visit to our patron saint after the Diana on Saturday of celebrations, where she was offered a Hail. They were also the first to participate in the offering accompanied by the most traditional instruments, “dolçaina i tabalet”.

The pageants of their captaincies and embassies have always been characterized by the presence of characteristic elements of this city which they represent, the result of this is the collaboration of the troupe in the recovery of the “Ball dels Cavallets” and subsequent donation to the people in the year 1999 on the occasion of the celebration of its third embassy.

Furthermore, they say to their credit that it was the first Christian troupe to dare to wear a singular costume at the entrance; and who fought for the incorporation of women into the party as full members.

In their ranks she formed the first women’s squad of the Moors and Christians Festival of Ontinyent in 1989.

Currently, they are a very united group of Festeros, united by their love for the festivities and their troupe, proudly wearing the colors and shield of Ontinyent.

This year they premiere the march “Lacrima” by Saül Gómez i Soler dedicated to Primer Tro 2023, Alfredo Moscardó Salido.
