The Omeyas troupe was founded after the 1970 festivities by a group of seventeen friends from the Spanish Moors who, together with other friends, decided to be part of the Moorish army.
As for the dress, the current gala gown differs little from the original (1971), which was modified twice (1979 and 1990) because the fabric ran out. It continues to show the sumptuousness of the dynasty it represents with the combination of greens and blues and with the majestic gold. The outfit is complemented by an elegant white cape, a blue fez with rhinestone trimmings and a fancy thread tassel, yellow shoes and a bag made of jacquard fabric. Daily attire consists of fuchsia gellab, fez hat, blue shoes and the classic leather bag.
The Omeyas troupe has held the captaincy of the Moro army on four occasions. The first was Gonzalo Gramage Ferrero (1979); the second, Rafael Iborra Irles (1990) and the third, Beatriz Alemany Sogues (2002), the first woman to hold this position in the Muslim host and the fourth held by Maria Insa Úbeda (2014).
Members of the troupe have also had the fortune of reciting Cervino’s verses. In 1977 Miguel Sarrió Ferri and Vicente Andrés Donat were the first ambassador and the first flag bearer, respectively. In 1996 Javier Riera Ayora (ambassador) and Salvador Espí Perelló (flag bearer) represented these positions. Finally, in 2008, Ana Penadés Torró was the ambassador and Lali Salmerón Callejas, the flag bearer.
The troupe is currently made up of approximately a hundred members (adults and children), distributed in the following clubs: Abderramán, Endavant, La Nostra Penya (founders), Llobens, Noranta-u, Perfil, Va Bé and Al Pot.
