Data of interest

Benimerins participated for the first time in Ontinyent’s “Moros i Cristians” festivity in 1947. Although, at first they were going to be called Tuaregs, the local authorities encouraged the founders to choose between other names. Eventually, they opted for the name of Benimerins.

Their clothing corresponds to the classic Ottoman style, featuring a green vest, red harem pants, a yellow sash, an elegant cape, a turban, a spear and babouches. This ensemble was chosen from among the different combinations made with the pieces of “La Roperia de la Viuda de Trelis d’Alcoi” and has remained almost intact since the beginnings of the Comparsa. In 1969, the shooting clothes were replaced by the official djellaba made of cotton and featuring a vertical striped design including the colors of the official attire: red, blue, green, yellow and white.

Since 2011, Benimerins have been located in the astonishing Plaça de Sant Domingo, where they share space with two other Comparsas: Moros Marinos and Mossàrabs. Among the extensive musical repertory that Benimerins have, it is worth highlighting the march Benimerins d’Ontinyent, composed by Daniel J. Ferrero Silvaje and first released during the 1991 Captaincy. This piece is always played at the end of events and parades, being an illustrious symbol of Benimerins.
